The Edible Gardens Festival is returning to the Margaret River Region on May 20-23 in 2027. And organisers are calling on local gardeners to open their gates and share what they’ve created.
Whether you’ve transformed a suburban backyard into a food-growing oasis, established a productive rural block, discovered clever ways to grow in a small space, or simply have a garden full of ideas worth sharing, festival organiser Trev Paddenburg would love to hear from you.
Now in its next chapter following another hugely successful 2026 festival, the not-for-profit Edible Gardens Festival is all about opening garden gates, sharing knowledge and inspiring people to grow more of their own food.
Edible Gardens Festival continues to grow in popularity
In 2026, hundreds of gardens were explored and thousands of conversations were sparked around growing food, composting, soil health, biodiversity, reducing waste, living more sustainably and growing food with the challenges of climate change. Now the search is on for a new round of gardens to inspire the community.
“Some of the most inspiring gardens aren’t necessarily the biggest or the most polished,” says organiser Trev Paddenburg. “They’re the gardens where someone has tried something clever. Solved a problem. Grown an abundance of food. Or found a way to work with nature. We want to hear those stories.
“If you’ve got a garden you’re proud of – or you know someone who does – this is your chance to share it with the community. Opening your garden is a whole lot of fun. And you never know how many people you might inspire.”
The festival showcases a diverse mix of productive gardens, from suburban backyards and community gardens to bush blocks, rural properties and local food-growing enterprises. Gardeners share their successes, failures, favourite techniques and hard-earned local knowledge directly with visitors.
Edible Gardens Festival 2027 to feature top productive patches
The 2027 program will again feature a carefully curated selection of open gardens across the region. There’s different gardens to explore each day, followed by afternoon workshops offering a deeper dive into practical gardening and sustainability skills. The format builds on the festival’s established approach of combining inspiring gardens with hands-on learning from local growers and experts.
At its heart, the festival is about much more than simply growing food. It’s about reconnecting people with their food, soil, gardens and local environment. And showing how growing food can help reduce food miles and waste, improve soil health and biodiversity, use water wisely, support healthier lifestyles and create more resilient communities.
“We want people to leave the festival thinking, ‘I could do that’,” says Trev. “You don’t need to be an expert or have the perfect garden. You just need a willingness to have a go. Learn from others. And share what you know.”
The festival is proudly not-for-profit and supported by the Shire of Augusta Margaret River and the Margaret River Regional Environment Centre among many others. It has a strong focus on practical, place-based knowledge and gardening in harmony with nature.
